Aparigraha and Gratitude
Aparigraha is an ancient Sanskrit word that means non-possessiveness. A word that seems so vital for thanksgiving and so important for our current times.
The yoga practice begins with 5 rules, dictating things not to do.
Ahimsa: do no harm
Satya: do not lie
Asteya: do not steal
Bramacharya: do not be excessive
Aparigraha: do not be possessive
The last one is literally translated as do not grasp tightly. In other words don't be greedy. I find this to be the gateway to the understanding and practice of gratitude. We must be grateful for what we have, knowing that it could be taken away at anytime. We must share what we have been given.
When we hoard our resources, our land, our talents, or energies, we drop into a feeling of not having enough and not trusting that life must flow. In yogic philosophy it is believed that all illness and unease comes from stagnation. So practice letting go, sharing fully, trusting and knowing that there is and will be enough. There is plenty to go around. So give thanks for what you have and hold it loosely so that it maybe shared with humanity. It is only in giving that we really receive.
And now a message from our sponsor:
You are enough!
You don't need anything else.
There is enough to share.
You are enough!
Those of you that are in Los Angeles for Thanksgiving. I will be teaching a thanksgiving class at 9:00 am at Ganesha Haus Yoga Lounge, followed by a Gratitude Council at 10:15. Would love to see you there!

Rise and Shine Yoga
I recently started teaching a Rise and Shine Yoga Class at 7am at Ganesha Haus Yoga Lounge in Brentwood. So for those that need a little help to get out of bed and get on the mat.
2. You will be more focused and energized when you leave your mat. You will notice you are more alert for work or school. Your mind will be more organized from the mindfulness practice of yoga. You will have great moment to moment awareness of what needs to be done next.
3. Your metabolism will get a quick boost. Working out in the morning helps to elevate your metabolic rate all day, especially if you are doing Pranayama (breath control) that strengthens the lungs. The cardiovascular system will experience EPOC excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, which increases the amount of calories burned for the rest of the day.
4. You will be less likely to skip your practice. Studies show that those who are most consistent maintaining exercise routines are those that work out in the morning.
5. It makes time for other priorities in the evening. One of my favorite yoga quotes is 'Yoga doesn't take time it gives time.' This is true in regards to how efficient you will be when you get to work. Also when you get home you will more likely feel 100% present for your family or whatever events you plan in the evening.
6. You won't have as many distractions. In the morning your mind is usually free from distracting thoughts and thus you can focus more exclusively on your body's sensations and needs. You can listen more closely to what your heart is yearning for through out the practice. The day will begin on your terms, not your bosses' agenda or your email alerts, or anything else that is constantly stealing your attention.
7. Your mood will improve. The ultimate goal of yoga is bliss. Starting your day off with yoga is sure to lift your spirits.
8. You can accomplish nothing else the rest of the day and still feel accomplished. Nothing more enjoyable than working hard and following it with completely guilt -free relaxation. If you can let the rest of the day be influenced by the sweet surrender of savasana, lucky you!
9. Your skin will naturally glow. Sweating is so good for the skin. Going upside down in poses like down dog, handstand, forward folds, and various other postures is great for combating gravities effects on the skin.
10. You will be hungry for breakfast and even better, feel more inclined to eat healthier. When you take time to get the mind and body on the same page you will notice that you will crave healthier foods that nourish you fully.
Here are 10 reasons to practice yoga in the morning
1. It feels wonderful to greet the morning with a Sun Salute! It is said that the best time of day is morning simply because your stomach is empty from sleeping and your body is needing to move and stretch.2. You will be more focused and energized when you leave your mat. You will notice you are more alert for work or school. Your mind will be more organized from the mindfulness practice of yoga. You will have great moment to moment awareness of what needs to be done next.

Corral Canyon
A couple years ago Shiva Rea introduced me to this beautiful hidden gem in Malibu called Corral Canyon during her prenatal yoga training. It is a great place in Los Angeles to bring your mat, your journal and invite in some wonderful self reflection. The rocks that surround this area make a great spot for meditating. Here is a link to find out how to drive and hike there.

MUDRAS
Here is a technique that serves two purposes: first, to help you stay mindful of your breath. Second, to help you hold a posture for a set amount of time (which is especially important to ensure you are staying balanced on the left and right, holding postures for the same amount of time on each side).
The 4 hand positions, or mudras of touching the fingers to the thumb, can be linked to the breath to keep track of the time you are in each pose. In essence, holding postures for at least 4 breaths to begin with. As you get stronger and stronger, you can add more breath and repeat the mudra sequence a second and third time.
Each Mudra helps to cultivate a specific feeling, and represents an archetypal meaning.
Gyan Mudra, touching the index finger to the thumb, makes you feel connected to something greater. "Gyan" means "wisdom" or "enlightenment" in sanskrit. The thumb, represents divine energy. The index finger (or "Jupiter finger") represents the self, or ego. Bringing these two together gives one the feeling of touching the divine. This mudra depicts a similar image as Michelangelo's "The Creation of Adam," where God's finger is connected to Man's. There is a wonderful circular nature that the breathe takes when these two fingers touch, which is extremely soothing to the body.
Shuni Mudra, touching the middle finger to the the thumb, brings patience. "Shuni" means "Saturn." In astrology, Saturn is the planet that makes you disciplined. It has to work the hardest to circle the sun being so far away. This mudra gives you the sensation of stability and strength. To breathe with this mudra cultivate perserverence.
Surya Mudra, touching the ring finger to the thumb, brings energy. "Surya" means "Sun," and this mudra brings health and vitality to the body. It is also known for speeding up the metabolism, resonating with the third chakra to stimulate digestion. To breath with this mudra is energizing.
Buddhi Mudra, touching the pinky finger to the thumb, brings mental clarity. "Buddhi" means "higher mind" or "intellect" (it follows the same etymology as the word "Buddha"). The pinky finger is referred to as the mercury finger. Mercury being the message bearer, quick witted, and able to communicate. This mudra helps with gaining higher understanding and discerning intuitive messages to gain knowledge.

In my morning class, I had the students do a familiar sequence we had been working on all week, but I added these 4 mudras to each posture. They completed each mudra for a full breath. So as they came into Warrior II, they turned their palms up and touched their index finger to their thumb on their first breath coming into Gyan Mudra. Then as they began their second breath I had them touch their middle finger to their thumb coming into Shuni Mudra. Then on the third breath, they touched their ring finger to their thumb coming into Surya Mudra. Finally touching their pinky finger to their thumb on their fourth breath coming into Buddhi Mudra. Upon completeing the four breaths, the class would transisition to the next posture beginning the whole series of Mudras again. This practice brought a new element of concentration to each pose and the classes breath deepened dramatically and felt more united.
The Yoga sutras say while in the posture one should focus on God. This takes that statement one step further and allows you to open your hands to the varying aspects of the divine. While practicing yoga you are able to contemplate enlightenment with Gyan Mudra, patience with Shuni Mudra, energy with Surya Mudra, and intuition with Buddhi Mudra.
All integral elements to a spiritual journey.

Movement and Stillness.
Last night I took a wonderful class with Elena Brower, an amazing Anasura Yoga teacher. In the class she combined vinyasa flow with her knowledge of Anasura instructing. I found it to be that magical, wonderful blend of movement and stillness. Although the flow aspects of the practice were more stagnant at times than some students were used to, this allowed her to honor the clear anatomical instructions that Anasura Yoga does so well. Once I settled into the slower pace of movement I found that my breathe deepened in the postures. It is always easier to hold revolved triangle when I know that a series of movements will soon follow. I love the marriage between holding poses and moving through poses. It is a lovely balance of yin and yang, prana and apana, sun and moon, movement and stillness.
My tendency is to want to move more than I want to be still. Since I know this about myself I try to set a timer and commit myself to stay in the pose until the timer beeps. While other days, I put on some good music and flow in and out of postures until my heart is content. It just depends on my mood and what I have been experiencing that day. This variety keeps my practice flexibile. Types of Yoga that honor continuous movement include Vinyasa, Flow, Kundalini, and Yogalates, to name a few. Types that honor holding of postures are Iyengar, Classical Hatha, and Yin yoga. These practices put a lot of emphasis on getting the structural alignment correct and deepening into the postures, thus strengthening the correct muscles. When I need a good challenge and a little bit of discipline these classes really hit the spot. I don't want to be misleading when I make the distinction between these two groups as if it were a hard and fast rule containing each style, because there is always elements of stillness and movement in all of these types. After all Desikachar says "that dynamic practice of asanas [postures] should be an essential part of every yoga session." Dynamic meaning movement in and out of the poses.
I want to encourage everybody to explore a variety of practices in regards to holding versus moving. Notice what your tendency is and allow the opposite element to enter into the practice. Whatever emphasis you choose keep pace with the rhythm of your breathe and let that determine how deep you go!
